Recorded Sounds for the Classroom

Sound recordings can open up new worlds for listeners. They give a sense of space and place,  bringing scenes and stories to life.   Through sound and shared listening, we can learn about different environments and cultures and unearth connections between people around the world.
The City Tech library has a recorded sound collection that contains vinyl records and compact discs.  The collection includes folk, classical, soul, world and jazz music as well as many spoken word recordings. You can also find recordings that feature poets like E.E Cummings and Pablo Neruda reading their own works, radio broadcasts, audio documentaries, famous speeches, vintage educational recordings and theatrical dramas.   The library provides listening stations in the Multimedia Resource Center and welcomes use of the library projection room for class listening sessions.

The new Recorded Sounds for the Classroom resource guide lists sound recordings that complement classes across four different City Tech departments including African American Studies, English, Humanities and Social Sciences.  The list is far from complete, however we hope the guide can connect City Tech students and faculty to new sources of inspiration and enrich coursework through stories and sounds.
